NIGHT AND EVENING PAY

Shift Differential Calculator

Calculate flat or percentage night, evening and weekend shift differential pay with an itemized gross-pay estimate.

THE PROBLEM THIS SOLVES

Your paycheck lists a shift premium, but you cannot tell whether the eligible hours or rate are correct.

Enter your base rate, paid hours and the differential from your employer policy. The result separates base pay from the extra amount so you can check each line.

HOW TO USE IT

Get a result you can actually check.

01

Confirm the rule

Find the eligible time window and whether the premium is a dollar amount or percentage.

02

Count eligible hours

Enter only the hours that fall under the written differential rule.

03

Compare each line

Check the calculated premium against the matching line on your pay stub.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See the calculation in context.

At a $28 base rate, a flat $3.25 differential for 32 eligible hours adds $104. A 10 percent differential would add $89.60 for the same hours.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you rely on the result

Is night shift differential required?

Federal law generally does not require extra pay simply because work occurs at night. Employer policy, an agreement or another applicable rule may provide it.

Can a weekend premium be added too?

Sometimes. Confirm whether your employer stacks premiums or pays only the higher one.

Does differential affect overtime?

Some differentials may be included in the regular rate used for overtime. Use the result as an estimate and check the applicable policy and rules.
