How to calculate pay for a 12-hour shift
Turn a long shift into paid hours, premiums and a clear gross-pay estimate.
You know you were at work for 12 hours, but you are unsure how many hours are paid and which portions receive night, weekend or overtime premiums.
Short answerSeparate the shift into paid time, unpaid meal time and premium windows. Then place the paid hours into the correct workweek before applying overtime.
Paid hours may be less than elapsed time
A 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift spans 12 hours. If there is one valid unpaid 30-minute meal period, paid time may be 11.5 hours. If the meal was interrupted by work, review the break rule and correction process rather than assuming the deduction is valid.
Split the shift by premium window
Suppose a night differential begins at 6 p.m. The final hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. may qualify even though most of the shift was during the day. Write the timeline before multiplying so eligible hours are not lost.
Daily overtime is not universal
Working more than eight hours in one day does not automatically create overtime under the general federal rule. Some states, agreements and employer policies have daily overtime. The common federal rule focuses on the workweek.
Three 12-hour shifts can still create extra time
Three full 12-hour paid shifts equal 36 hours. Add a required four-hour meeting and the week reaches 40. Add another pickup shift and overtime may begin. Training and other required work should not disappear from the weekly total.
Use one consistent calculation
Paid hours multiplied by the base rate gives straight-time base pay. Add each eligible differential separately. Then apply the overtime method required for the workweek. Avoid multiplying the entire shift by every premium.
Compare the result with the stub
Check paid hours, premium hours and overtime hours separately. A total difference is much easier to diagnose when you know which of those three categories changed.
